Kayenta, 4 Corners and Monument Valley

Posted on December 11, 2024February 21, 2025

From Bluff, we continued our journey through Navajo land, making our way into Kayenta, AZ. This small town is home to the only Supercharger in the area, so we planned to stay for two nights to take full advantage of the location. Our itinerary included a visit to the iconic Four Corners Monument, where we had the unique experience of standing at the exact point where Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico meet. It was a cool novelty to be in four states at once! We also set aside time to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Monument Valley, with its towering sandstone formations and vast desert scenery that felt straight out of a movie. The combination of history, culture, and natural beauty made this stop a truly unforgettable part of our road trip.

Monument Valley and Goosenecks State Park

Goosenecks State Park may be small, but its breathtaking view is anything but. The park overlooks a dramatic series of deep, winding bends carved by the San Juan River—like a multi-loop version of Horseshoe Bend. The layered canyon walls and sweeping desert landscape made for an incredible sight, well worth the stop.

While exploring the area, we also made a fun and iconic stop at the exact spot where Forrest Gump ended his famous cross-country run in the movie. Standing on that long stretch of open road with Monument Valley’s towering formations in the background was a surreal experience, and of course, we had to snap a photo to mark the moment.

Kayenta, AZ

A couple of things about Kayenta are definitely worth mentioning. First, inside the local Burger King, there’s an unexpected but fascinating exhibit dedicated to the Navajo Code Talkers. These brave Marines played a crucial role in World War II by using their native language to develop an unbreakable code, and the displays provide a great insight into their contributions, as well as Navajo history in general.

Secondly, if you ever find yourself in Kayenta, I highly recommend stopping by Amigo Café. This small, family-run restaurant serves incredible food, and their Navajo Burger is a must-try. The combination of a juicy patty on fluffy Navajo fry bread makes for a unique and delicious meal—definitely one of the best food experiences in town!
